Stage 1 of the restrictions due to the Corona virus will be expanded from Walvis Bay to the entire Erongo region at midnight today. This was announced by President Hage Geingob this afternoon. The lockdown will last 14 days, i.e. until midnight on Monday, June 22.

Geingob justified the measure by referring to the recent new infections in Walvis Bay, including the truck driver who had disregarded his quarantine. The aim of the lockdown is to limit the further infections to be expected spatially and in numbers.

At the same time, Geingob asked for understanding of the measure. It should contribute to continuing the nationwide process of further opening – up to the opening of the borders for tourists. The President stressed that he and his government are also working towards an early economic recovery (click here for the script).

New infections in quarantine camp

In the morning, Minister of Health and Social Services, Kalumbi Shangula, reported two new cases of corona infections. Case 30 is a 27-year-old student and Case 31 is a 50-year-old woman. Both had returned from India. They had landed in Johannesburg and travelled from there to the Namibian border post Ariamsvlei east of Karasburg by mini-bus. Both have been tested in quarantine and appear to have no symptoms.
